El Confidencial have been publishing reports (mainly leaked audio clips and text messages) involving Barcelona centre-half Gerard Pique and Spanish FA president Luis Rubiales, and it looks like Sergio Ramos has been dragged into the ongoing scandal due to his conversation with Pique.
The leaks started with the reports of the pair colluding with each other to take the Spanish Super Cup to Saudi Arabia, which netted Pique a reported €24m through his company Kosmos.
Further conversations came to the light subsequently, making public Pique’s requests to include him in the Tokyo Olympics and another that showed the 35-year-old vent his frustration regarding a VAR decision to Rubiales.
In a sensational audio clip published today, Ramos can be heard talking about a power struggle between Rubiales and player’s union (AFE) president David Aganzo after Pique had turned to him for information in helping Rubiales oust Aganzo from his post.
"I know the relationship that Rubi and Aganzo have had and they were close brothers…. And what happens? When Rubi presented himself for the presidency of the Federation, Aganzo put in for the AFE. What happens? Each wants to rule in his way," Ramos is heard saying.
"So, this is also a very sensitive issue, Geri. And I am with Aganzo, obviously, I've already told you, the relationship was correct and professional for belonging to the union and defending the interests of the players. But I don't have anything with him either and after the ugly thing he did to me I have given up on him. I think this is not our issue, it is an issue. I don’t know, I think that here it is their matter to solve it among themselves.” explained the Real Madrid man.
Pique then forwarded the audio clip to Rubiales, requesting him to keep it confidential.
